October in the Garden

This year I will be building a Cold Frame to extend the growing season at my home.  There are a few things I must have through winter.  Of course my herbs; parsley, oregano, rosemary, thyme and sage. Other favorites are leafy greens, spinach, radish and kale. Below are instructions for building your own cold frame, perhaps this weekend.  Most of these materials can be picked up at your local hardware store. (Also consider pre-made modular frames available online)

Design considerations: height, weight and space needed for plants.  I like the dimensions of this design, some of the materials can be substituted.  For example, polyethelene film is suggested but you could use an old window frame or any other clear plastic covering.

I plan on attaching an automatic vent opener to my cold frame to ensure that plants don't get scorched during the hot sunny days that are not uncommon during Arkansas winters.
