Why Natural is Better New technologies, chemical use, and mechanization have contributed to a considerable change in agriculture since middle of 20th century. Food production has increased, allowing fewer farmers to produce the majority of the food and fiber in the U.S.
However, not all of the changes have had a positive effect. Some of the costs of such production are topsoil depletion, groundwater contamination, the decline of the family farm, and increasing costs. Chemicals associated with fertilizers and pesticides may be responsible for damage to the nervous system, eyes and skin, and may even cause cancer.
Natural and organic farming has become increasingly popular as people become informed of the risks of the established means of agriculture. The method of sustainable agriculture address the environmental and social concerns, and also offers better opportunities for growers, consumers, and everyone else involved in the food system.
More on Organic Farming Crop and animal operations complement each other both biologically and economically. Despite this compatible relationship, more and more farmers are separating the two and specializing in either crop or animal production. Either way, there are a few principals that apply to both.
- Diversity: Diversified farms are usually more economically and ecologically resilient. While farming with one crop or animal may be easier, a loss in either any one year could put the farm out of business. By producing a variety, farmers are less vulnerable to economic risks.
- Soil Management: Soil must be taken care of to produce healthy crops and grasses that are less susceptible to pests and disease. Using synthetic chemicals will deplete the soil, resulting in a greater use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides. Protect and build your soil by using compost, reducing tillage, maintaining a cover with mulches, and using Perfect Pasture and Farm.
- Grazing Management (for animals): The number of animals per unit area must be appropriate for the land and feed sources. The carrying capacity and stocking rate must take into account short and long-term droughts. Make sure all areas are being uses equally. If animals use one area more than others, the result could be permanent loss of vegetative cover.
