More information about Charles Wilber
Born in Kansas and raised in Arkansas, Charles Wilber grew up a true student of nature. On a vacation to Sequoia National Park in California, an impressionable Charles saw the world’s largest tree known as “General Sherman” and was awestruck by the fact that water, soil, and air were all that it took to grow this massive plant. He examined the soil and returned home, determined to set about growing his own large plants.
Having grown up working in the fields, young Charles had witnessed firsthand the benefits of compost and organic fertilizer while working the rows of his family farm. Combining his learning with what he had read about organic and natural farming, Mr. Wilber setup his garden and began to experiment with differing ways of growing plants.
After five long years of testing different methods through trial and error, Mr. Wilber finally reached his goal of a ten-foot tall tomato plant. Newspapers and television stations came out and interviewed the man with the “biggest” green thumb and the rest, as they say, is history. He continued improving his methods and increasing the growth of his plants until they reached heights thought previously unattainable.
Today, Charles still holds records for the World’s largest cherry tomato plant, growing one plant a staggering 27 feet high! With over 127 pages of content and lots of pictures of his tomato plants and other gigantic produce (a 105 lb watermelon and 17 foot tall corn stalks to name a few), How to Grow World Record Tomatoes can put you on the path to growing your own world records too!
More information about the tree that inspired Charles, aka “General Sherman”
Standing a massive 275 feet tall and with a circumference of 105 feet, the world’s largest tree (named after General William Tecumseh Sherman) stands majestically in the Giant Forest area of Sequoia National Park near Visalia, California.
Estimated to be over 2,200 years old, this tree is recognized as the largest organism on the face of the planet, and is one of the oldest remaining trees still left not just in the United States, but in the world too.
Having examined the soil, Mr. Wilber came away with the conclusion that the natural mulching that laid on the surface around the base of the massive trunk is what led to the tremendous growth. So he mimicked this idea by introducing straw and other top layers of moisture trapping detritus onto the soil around his own plants, just as he had seen around the large tree. The results were incredible, leading to increased nutrient uptake for the plants and an eventual Guinness World record for Mr. Wilber.
